What happened?

So, what happened again?

At my home was an array of servers for various things. Most of them were built during High School in 2014. In this rack was an older 4U Dell PowerEdge which hosted the website, remote HF radio, SDR, and a few other radio-related things.

In December of 2019 the website performance was poor and the remote radio kept dropping out. The server was removed from the rack, cleaned and thoroughly checked over. Upon restoration, everything was back to normal. The following morning I received an email from one of the other hams who uses the remote radio stating that it was unavailable.

As soon as I got near the shed the beeping was heard and upon opening the cabinet all of the drives were offline. It appears that for some reason the raid controller in the server died catastrophically and took the drives with it. All four hard disks are corrupted and two will not stay powered up for more than a few minutes. Unfortunately due to a configuration error in my setup, the website directory was not being backed up.

In 2021 another server was deployed and hosting was brought back up, however due to some network security complications this was not publicly available. Considering the cost of power and how few resources I actually need to host, I have decided to move my basic sites onto cloud hosting with Google and Digital Ocean.

Here we are now, starting fresh and hosting the site with google.
